Overview

Since 1948, Peterson Strobe Tuners have defined the standard in tuning accuracy. The StroboPLUS HDC encompasses decades of tuning authority and technology to deliver the ultimate strobe tuner/metronome combo!

The StroboPLUS HDC’s 0.1 cent tuning accuracy will tune any instrument with the utmost precision. Featuring a high-definition, multi-color display with variable color LED backlight, the StroboPLUS HDC display can be seen easily across the stage, bench, studio or classroom. Over 200 exclusive Sweetened Tunings® and Guided Tunings on-board accommodate a variety of instruments, temperaments, and musical genres.

The highly configurable metronome features precise 0.1 BPM adjustability in eighth notes, quarter notes, dotted quarter notes or half notes, a tempo range of 10-280 BPM, over 100 subdivisions, accent patterns, and polyrhythms. The StroboPLUS HDC can also be used to play thousands of bars of tempo maps, programmable from the Peterson Connect Web App. A single tempo map can play an entire score of meter changes, accent patterns, subdivisions, bar colors, silent bars and gradually curved tempo changes like accelerandos and ritardandos. I purchased the strobo+HDC primarily for Pedal Steel guitar tuning and practice. I used the tuner to calculate all my offsets and created some sweetened tunings for my guitar specifically. This thing is crazy accurite. Now i can tune up in a noisy environment with 0 Hassel and it is absolutely bang on . I love that you can customize the color for each tuning and the display is huge. The time generator is super handy for accuracy training and the built in metronome has more features than i can comprehend. I have the strobo clip hd as well and when the power switch broke I received amazing support from this company. Being from rural Canada that means everything. I've used their clip-on tuner for a number of years now and have always been impressed by the accuracy, so I decided to look into their strobo tuner. What really caught my attention were the tempo maps. I play multi-sectional music and have always wanted a tool to create tempo maps for long extended pieces. The ability to create the map and download it onto the metronome has turned out to be a real plus. The web interface works quite well. So far amazingly good!

I bought their guitar-headstock tuner to start, but when it broke I decided to step up to this one. (Peterson was NOT at fault. I stepped right on it and crushed it...) I love this thing. It is insanely accurate - the sweetened tunings are cool, too. The Metronome is right on the money. I haven't figured out how to set tempo maps and the like... mostly because I've only gotten to work with it for an hour so far. I'd highly recommend it to anyone. The fact that it's USB chargeable is a really nice touch.

I love the preset-function. I can easily tell what is coming up even if I can't see it very well. All in all a great tuner *AND* metronome.

Dear Peterson Team,

Thank you for creating such a great product, I really enjoy it!

However, I have a few quibbles about the Stroboplus HDC I purchased, there are possible solutions that the Stroboplus HDC already implements, but I did not see them in the manual.

So, here are the things I dislike about the Stroboplus HDC tuner:

1) The tuning mechanism is great, however you could display the measured tuning difference in 0.1 cents or such, on the display as -50.0 and +50.0 cents, it would be awesome to have that capability on top of the stroboscope disks.

2) The metronome and tones are sounding only through the speaker and not through the Guitar Output jack. It could have been useful to be able to synchronize a whole band or record these sounds cleanly (without a mic).

3) All product functionality is NOT available in the device itself, but it requires registration and the use of the website. I know why you did it this way, because otherwise fewer people would register their produ ...

Does my StroboPLUS HDC require calibration?

Generally, your StroboPLUS HDC will not require calibration and should remain perfectly accurate if it has not been damaged.

Unlike more modern Peterson strobes, legacy models such as the Peterson 400, 420, 450 and 700 do require occasional calibration.

If you require service, please open a support ticket and return the tuner for repair.

How do I read a strobe display?

Basically, the strobe image appears to travel to the left if your instrument is flat of the desired pitch and to the right if it is sharp. On earlier models such as the StroboStomp 1, StroboStomp 2, VS-1, VS-II and V-SAM, the strobe image travels upward if your instrument is sharp and downward if your instrument is flat of the desired pitch.

Adjust your instrument until the pattern is as close to still as possible. Strobe displays are 'real-time' and extremely precise. They require very fine tuning adjustments to stop the display because the frequency/pitch of any instrument is never totally stable.

You'll quickly learn to read the display, make the most precise adjustments and appreciate the high resolution that only a Peterson provides.

Is the accuracy the same for all Peterson tuners?

Yes, the accuracy is within 0.1 cents (1/1000 of one semitone) as with all Peterson Strobe Tuners. An important thing to note is that Peterson Strobe Tuners have ultra high definition displays, so not only are they highly accurate in detecting a note but they have the ability to display that accuracy. Other products claim accuracy but do not have the high definition screen to display the level of accuracy in which they claim. If you cannot see the accuracy, it is of little value. Only Peterson provides High Definition Strobe Tuning.

Peterson Connect does not detect my StroboPLUS HDC in Linux environment.

Chrome needs access to /dev/hidraw*, so either set "chmod a+rw /dev/hidraw*" or start chrome as root with the --no-sandbox option

*Some Ubuntu based distros do not allow running Chrome as root with the --no-sandbox option enabled. -Running as root without --no-sandbox is not supported. See https://crbug.com/638180. You can however run Chromium as a normal user and invoke that option.

Some users have reprted a fix by adding a new udev rule as follows: KERNEL=="hidraw*", SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", MODE="0664", GROUP="plugdev", ATTRS{idVendor}=="2368", ATTRS{idProduct}=="*SEE BELOW"

* Some Peterson products operate in two different modes with individual product id's for firmware update operations. Multiple rules may need to be created. Here is the list of Peterson USB product ID's

If there is trouble connecting or reconnecting as a product is switching modes, ex: StroboPLUS HDC product id 0006 to StroboPLUS HDC Firmware Mode 8006 run the command:

"sudo chmod a+rw /dev/hidraw*"

This command will solve any "waiting on user input" or if the update button in Peterson Connect is unresponsive. The command may need to be executed more than once.

What is my StroboPLUS HDC’s Sweetened Tunings feature all about?

A Sweetener is a set of cent offsets or a deviation from generic Equal Temperament interval spacing traditionally used in tuning. Tuners made by Peterson, including the StroboPLUS HDC, contain many choices of Sweeteners, in other words, several presets with differing interval spacing relevant to the instrument being tuned. If you’ve never been happy with how your instrument tunes up with your present tuner, a Sweetener could be just the thing to change that without any modifications whatsoever. The StroboPLUS HDC offers 219 unique and very accurate tweaks which often make all the difference.
